A little about the history of Yoga…
“The word YOGA is derived from the sanskrit root yuj meaning to bind, join, attach and yoke, to direct and concentrate one’s attention on, to use and apply. It also means union or communion. It is the true union of our will with the will of God. ‘It thus means’, says Mahadev Desai in his introduction to the Gita according to Gandhi, ‘the yoking of all the powers of the body, mind and soul to God; it means the disciplining of the intellect, the mind, the emotions, the will, which that Yoga presupposes; it means a poise of the soul which enables one to look at life in all aspects evenly”
– B.K.S IYENGAR, Light in Yoga
Yoga is a phenomenal way to peel back the layers of the ego and thru perpetual conditioning of the physical, mental and spiritual bodies, it enables us to find our true self – a changeless, stable, quiet self beyond the ever shifting emotions of the mind with which we tend to misidentify ourselves. Yoga reveals this true self by a process known as citta vritti nirodhah – ‘ the control of the activities of the mind ‘.
We accomplish this not by learning to twist ourselves into what often seems like an impossible position, or bending in all directions effortlessly, but working to our own capability, within our physical, emotional and spiritual bodies but most importantly with our BREATH to explore and discover the way into our internal landscape, our inner life, energy and our life force (known as prana) which flows thru us giving us the eternal energy we need for survival.
